Choose Patong if nightlife is a stated goal of the trip — Bangla Road, clubs, and a large accommodation concentration share the district, so repeated evening transfers are unnecessary. Choose Kata for a calmer village-and-beach pattern with walkable restaurants. In the roughly November-to-April planning window, compare current sea conditions; in monsoon months follow beach flags rather than assuming either beach is swimmable. With no nightlife requirement, Kata is the lower-friction default.

What Patong is actually for
Patong concentrates much of the island's visitor nightlife into one walkable core around Bangla Road, with accommodation throughout the surrounding district. That concentration is the product. It buys convenience for a nightlife-led trip but adds crowd and noise trade-offs for a quieter one. Book it deliberately for the nightlife trip, and verify the hotel's exact block and recent noise reviews before paying.
What Kata does better
Kata is the version of a Thai beach town that balances: a real village core where dinner is a walk not a ride, a beach with room for families in the calm season, surfboard rentals when the monsoon swell arrives, and a hotel range from guesthouse to hillside resort. Its nightlife exists at conversation volume. For first trips, couples, and families it simply fits — and Patong's strip is a short taxi away on the one evening you want it, which is a far better arrangement than sleeping over the bass line for a week.
The same coast, two seasons
Both beaches face west into the same seasonal rhythm: roughly November to April is typically drier with calmer water more likely; May to October brings more southwest-monsoon waves, currents, and red-flag days. The season moves the decision less than you might expect — Patong's case is indoors after dark, Kata's village works year-round — but it changes what the beach itself offers: swimming only when local conditions permit, and surf lessons only when an experienced instructor judges them suitable. Whatever the month, stay out under red flags and follow lifeguard instructions; the west-coast rips in monsoon season are the island's real hazard.
Compare the ordinary night as well as the beach
The choice becomes clearer when you write down dinner, the way home and the kind of evening you want.
Arrival day
For Patong, check the room position relative to the nightlife streets. For Kata, check the route between the property, beach access and restaurants. Settle locally rather than arriving and immediately crossing the island.
A full day
Use Patong when the busy evening is part of the holiday. Use Kata when a beach-and-meal routine matters more. Check any excursion pickup at the specific property before using it as a reason to choose either base.
Before moving on
Ask about bags and the airport pickup location. Keep a final beach visit separate from the time needed to collect luggage and reach the departure vehicle.
Compare the whole stay
Compare the room and transfer quote with the evenings you would otherwise travel between the two beaches.

How far is Kata from Patong?
Kata sits south of Patong beyond Karon and the intervening headlands. It is practical to visit Patong for one planned evening by road, but travel time varies with the exact pickup point and traffic; check the route at the hour you expect to return.
Is Kata Beach good for swimming?
Kata can suit swimming when conditions are calm, more commonly in the roughly November-to-April drier season. The May-to-October monsoon increases surf and rip-current risk. Check flags and lifeguard advice in every month, stay out under red flags, and let an experienced instructor assess conditions before a surf lesson.
