Canggu and Seminyak: the scene coast, at two volumes
Canggu is Bali's surf-and-laptop scene: beach clubs, cafes, and a young, social crowd spread along lanes that were rice fields recently enough that the traffic has nowhere to go. It is the base for meeting people and surfing beach breaks, and the worst base for anyone who values quiet or quick transfers. Seminyak, just south, is the groomed version — boutique hotels, the island's most polished restaurant strip, a long walkable beach — with the scene turned from party toward comfort. Ubud: the interior is the point of Bali
Ubud is not a beach base — it sits inland and road time varies materially — and that is its argument. This is the Bali of rice terraces, river gorges, temple ceremonies, yoga halls, and craft villages, with mornings that start in green quiet instead of engine noise. Its centre is busy and commercial; the quieter landscape stays sit outside it, so location within Ubud matters as much as the decision to go. Most first trips work best with three or four Ubud nights paired with a coastal base, in either order.
Uluwatu and the Bukit: cliffs, surf, and scattered stays
The Bukit peninsula in the far south is the dramatic coast: limestone cliffs, the island's most famous surf breaks, small white-sand coves reached by stairs, and the clifftop temple at Uluwatu. Stays are scattered along a ridge road rather than clustered in a town, so you live by scooter or driver, and evenings are hotel evenings unless you ride to them. It rewards surfers, couples, and anyone whose trip is built around sunsets and swell; it frustrates travellers who want to step out of the lobby into a street with restaurants on it.
Sanur and Nusa Dua: the calm-water answers
Sanur, on the southeast coast, is the family and easy-pace base: a long paved beachfront promenade, calm reef-protected water, an older and quieter scene, and the main fast-boat port for the Nusa islands — useful if Nusa Penida or Lembongan is on the plan. Nusa Dua is a planned resort area with large hotels, managed grounds, and easy access to resort facilities. Choose Sanur when you want calm plus a walkable town; choose Nusa Dua when the resort itself is the centre of the stay.
Christmas and New Year: build a wet-season-resilient Bali stay
December and early January sit inside Bali's typical wetter pattern, so a festive stay should work even when an outdoor plan moves. Keep the trip to one or two bases, choose a property whose dining, pool, and immediate area are useful without a cross-island drive, and leave exposed beach or boat days flexible until conditions are known. Ubud plus one southern base still gives the fullest first trip, but travellers who mainly want reliable swim time should compare Phuket before committing. The pattern informs the plan; it is not a forecast for a particular Christmas week.
Shape a Bali stay around one coast or the interior
For three nights, our preference is one base with a clear daily routine. For a longer visit, a coast-and-Ubud split can earn its moving day.
Arrival day
Choose Canggu or Seminyak for the western coast, Sanur or Nusa Dua for a different coastal routine, or Ubud for interior time. Ask for the actual vehicle entrance and late check-in arrangement before choosing a room from a map pin.
A full day
From a coastal base, keep a beach-and-dinner day in that area. From Ubud, give the interior its own unhurried day. A visit to another part of Bali is a separate transport decision rather than something every day must contain.
Before moving on
If moving from Ubud to the coast, protect time for packing and the road journey. For an early flight, compare the final transfer from the precise property instead of treating all of southern Bali as equally close.
Compare the whole stay
Compare room total plus the journeys you will repeat: dinner, the beach access and the airport. A cheaper villa needs a transport allowance when those trips require a car.
For a split stay, add the moving-day vehicle and any lost usable hours. Compare kitchens, breakfast and cancellation deadlines for the same party.

Choose the particular beach end before the room. Check the walk to breakfast and dinner, the road crossing and the way back after dark; a Canggu address alone does not define that daily circuit.

Is it better to stay in one place in Bali or move around?
Two bases is the sweet spot for a week or more — typically Ubud plus one coast. More than two and the slow south-island traffic starts consuming half-days; one base works if the trip is genuinely a single-mode holiday (all-surf, or all-resort).
Which part of Bali has the best beaches for swimming?
For calm swimming, the east and southeast: Sanur's reef-protected shallows and Nusa Dua's groomed resort beach. The southwest coast from Canggu through Seminyak is surf coast — beautiful, but with waves and currents that can be dangerous even for strong swimmers. Conditions vary with swell, tides and weather; check locally on the day and follow flags and lifeguard advice.
How many nights do you need in Ubud?
Three or four for a first visit: enough for the rice terraces and a temple or waterfall day without rushing, and short enough to leave the coast its share of the week. Travellers focused on yoga, craft, or slow mornings often stay longer and make Ubud the main base instead.
Common mistakes that weaken the trip.

Booking 'central Bali' — no such base exists, and hotels marketed on centrality are usually just in traffic.
Planning daily cross-island outings from one base. The distances look small; the road time is what actually shapes the day.
