The most common Bali planning mistake is booking 'somewhere central'. There is no central: the island is a set of distinct bases separated by slow traffic, and the area you sleep in decides what your trip is. Choose the base first, the hotel second.

Canggu and Seminyak: the scene coast, at two volumes
Canggu is Bali's surf-and-laptop scene: beach clubs, cafes, and a young, social crowd spread along lanes that were rice fields recently enough that the traffic has nowhere to go. It is the base for meeting people and surfing beach breaks, and the worst base for anyone who values quiet or quick transfers. Seminyak, just south, is the groomed version — boutique hotels, the island's most polished restaurant strip, a long walkable beach — with the scene turned from party toward comfort. Ubud: the interior is the point of Bali
Ubud is not a beach base — it sits inland and road time varies materially — and that is its argument. This is the Bali of rice terraces, river gorges, temple ceremonies, yoga halls, and craft villages, with mornings that start in green quiet instead of engine noise. Its centre is busy and commercial; the quieter landscape stays sit outside it, so location within Ubud matters as much as the decision to go. Most first trips work best with three or four Ubud nights paired with a coastal base, in either order.
Uluwatu and the Bukit: cliffs, surf, and scattered stays
The Bukit peninsula in the far south is the dramatic coast: limestone cliffs, the island's most famous surf breaks, small white-sand coves reached by stairs, and the clifftop temple at Uluwatu. Stays are scattered along a ridge road rather than clustered in a town, so you live by scooter or driver, and evenings are hotel evenings unless you ride to them. It rewards surfers, couples, and anyone whose trip is built around sunsets and swell; it frustrates travellers who want to step out of the lobby into a street with restaurants on it.
Sanur and Nusa Dua: the calm-water answers
Sanur, on the southeast coast, is the family and easy-pace base: a long paved beachfront promenade, calm reef-protected water, an older and quieter scene, and the main fast-boat port for the Nusa islands — useful if Nusa Penida or Lembongan is on the plan. Nusa Dua is the gated enclave: a strip of large resorts on a groomed beach with conference-grade polish, sealed off from the island's noise, and also from most of its life. Choose Sanur when you want calm plus a real town; choose Nusa Dua when the resort itself is the destination and you will day-trip for everything else.
Christmas and New Year: build a wet-season-resilient Bali stay
December and early January sit inside Bali's typical wetter pattern, so a festive stay should work even when an outdoor plan moves. Keep the trip to one or two bases, choose a property whose dining, pool, and immediate area are useful without a cross-island drive, and leave exposed beach or boat days flexible until conditions are known. Ubud plus one southern base still gives the fullest first trip, but travellers who mainly want reliable swim time should compare Phuket before committing. Which part of Bali has the best beaches for swimming?
For calm swimming, the east and southeast: Sanur's reef-protected shallows and Nusa Dua's groomed resort beach. The southwest coast from Canggu through Seminyak is surf coast — beautiful, but with waves and currents that can be dangerous even for strong swimmers. Conditions vary with swell, tides and weather; check locally on the day and follow flags and lifeguard advice.
How many nights do you need in Ubud?
