The seasons point in opposite directions — use that
The most useful fact in this comparison is the one most guides bury: the two islands' good seasons are roughly inverted. Phuket's typically drier months with calmer seas run from about November to April; from May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain bands and red-flag swimming days. Bali's dry season is roughly April to October, with the wetter months from about November to March. Neither wet season makes a trip impossible — but if your dates are school holidays in July, Bali is playing at home and Phuket is not, and in January the reverse. Bali is the deeper trip: interior, culture, and base variety
Bali's case does not rest on its beaches, which are good rather than world-beating. It rests on everything behind them: Ubud's rice terraces and monkey forest, a living temple culture that shapes the calendar with daily offerings and processions, waterfalls and volcano views in the interior, and a coastline whose bases genuinely differ — surf-scene Canggu, polished Seminyak, clifftop Uluwatu, calm family Sanur, gated Nusa Dua. Phuket is the easier week: one beach choice, then boats
Phuket is a major Thai resort island built for the uncomplicated version of the trip: pick a beach that matches your volume — Patong for nightlife, Kata or Karon for balance, Bang Tao for resort polish — and the holiday largely runs itself. In the drier season, its west-coast beaches more often suit a swim-led trip than Bali's surf-facing coast, but daily flags still decide. Its second act is the water around it: Phang Nga Bay's limestone karsts and the Phi Phi islands are established boat excursions. What it lacks is Bali's interior range; Old Phuket Town adds a distinct historic and food-focused chapter away from the resort coast.
Getting there and getting around differ less than people expect
Both islands have international airports and regional connections, but the best route depends on the traveller's origin and date. On the ground, both trips commonly rely on taxis, ride-hailing, transfers, or hired drivers, with bus or shuttle services useful on selected routes. Bali can still be the better festive trip when Ubud, temples, food, and a rain-flexible itinerary are the point. Choose the trip first, then verify the exact forecast, sea flags, hotel programme, and cancellation terms; a countdown event does not override weather or base fit.
