Tokyo or Kyoto
Tokyo is the modern metropolis, Kyoto the historic one, and the Tokaido Shinkansen makes them a pair. When a first trip should take both, how to weight the nights, and when to pick just one.

Bali
One island, six genuinely different bases. Picking between Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud, Uluwatu, Sanur, and Nusa Dua is the decision that shapes everything else.
Phuket
A major Thai resort island where Patong, Kata, Karon, Bang Tao, and the Old Town serve five different trips at five different volumes.
Tokyo
The city is too big to 'stay central' — the honest question is which rail hub you sleep on: Shinjuku, Shibuya, Tokyo Station and Ginza, or Asakusa and Ueno.
Kyoto
Downtown for food and ease, Gion and Higashiyama for the historic evening streets, the Station for day-trip logistics, Arashiyama for a quieter riverside night.

Bali or Phuket?
Choose by trip texture: Bali for interior culture, rice-terrace landscapes, and a base variety no single beach strip offers; Phuket for a simpler swim-and-eat beach holiday with easy island day trips.
Do not choose by price alone — both islands run from hostel to five-star, and the flight from your origin usually moves the total more than the hotel does.
Tokyo or Kyoto — or how to split?
On a first Japan trip of a week or more, take both on the Tokaido Shinkansen and weight nights toward Tokyo. Under five days, pick one and pick by whether the trip is about the modern city or the historic one.
Do not day-trip Kyoto from Tokyo. The distance makes it possible and the evening is the whole point of staying: Gion and the lanes empty of day visitors after dark.
Which Bali area fits the trip?
Decide surf-and-scene versus interior calm first: Canggu and Uluwatu against Ubud. Then let logistics pick the neighbour: Seminyak for polish, Sanur for families and boat connections, Nusa Dua for resort seclusion.
Do not book 'central Bali' — there is no useful centre, and traffic makes cross-island commuting the most common first-trip regret.
Shinjuku or Shibuya?
Both are western Yamanote hubs and both work. Shinjuku for rail reach, hotel depth, and day trips; Shibuya for a denser, younger centre with less station sprawl.
Do not pick by nightlife photos alone: both districts quiet sharply two streets off the core, and the hotel's walk to the platform matters more than the district's fame.
