Choose Shinjuku for reach and range: a major rail junction, hotels from capsule to luxury, Golden Gai's bar lanes, and day-trip lines west — the lower-risk default when routes are varied. Choose Shibuya for compression: the scramble, nearby Harajuku and Omotesando, and food-and-bar evenings in a tighter area. Go Tokyo lists the hubs seven Yamanote minutes apart, so pick by whether you want Tokyo at junction scale or walking scale.

Shinjuku is the junction
Shinjuku's case is infrastructural. Its station complex combines the Yamanote and Chuo lines with private railways west toward Hakone and the mountains and multiple airport-transfer options. Around it, the skyscraper district, Shinjuku Gyoen, Kabukicho, and Golden Gai create very different station sides. The cost is the scale itself and the busiest entertainment blocks. The fix is positional: choose East, West, or South before comparing hotels.
Shibuya is the walkable centre
Shibuya delivers the west side at a tighter scale. The scramble crossing and station sit below streets leading toward Harajuku, Omotesando, Daikanyama, and the district's dining and nightlife. Go Tokyo documents multiple rail and Metro lines and gives the adjacent walking relationships. The trades are a busy core and less direct access to some westbound day-trip lines than Shinjuku.
Tiebreakers that actually work
Day trips in the plan (Hakone and the mountains): Shinjuku, for direct western lines. First long-haul trip and you want broad hotel choice: Shinjuku. Walking-first travel style, fashion and cafes, one-neighbourhood evenings: Shibuya. Nightlife is a draw at different registers — Golden Gai's tiny bars and Kabukicho's volume against Shibuya's youth circuit. The official seven-minute Yamanote link means this is a choice of home register, not a loss of access.
Choose the hub that supports your evenings
The useful comparison is your actual train route and the final walk, rather than which district looks more central on a city map.
Arrival day
Match the airport connection to the correct station and exit. Check the walk with bags before choosing between a Shinjuku tower hotel and an address around Shibuya.
A full day
If several western Tokyo evenings are on your list, compare the route home from them. Keep a distant eastern-city outing together as one day instead of repeatedly crossing Tokyo from either base.
