Canggu and Seminyak sit on the same surf coast a few kilometres apart and get booked interchangeably. They should not be: one is a scattered scene you ride between on lanes that jam daily, the other a groomed strip you can actually walk. Pick by how you want an evening to end.
Choose Canggu for the young surf-and-social scene: beach clubs, cafe mornings, co-working, and beach breaks — accepting scattered lanes, heavy scooter traffic, and noise. Choose Seminyak for the polished version: the island's best restaurant strip, boutique hotels, and a long beach you can walk end to end, at a calmer volume and generally shorter transfers. Couples and food-led trips usually land Seminyak; surf-led and social trips land Canggu.

Canggu is a scene, not a town
Canggu is really three or four beach ends — Batu Bolong, Berawa, Pererenan and their inland lanes — stitched together by narrow roads that were built for rice farming, not for the volume now on them. That is both the charm and the cost. The charm: surf lessons at beach breaks selected for the day by an experienced instructor, cafes and gyms and co-working spaces full of people to meet, beach clubs for the sunset hours. The cost: everything is a scooter ride, the lanes jam through the middle of the day, and quiet is something you book deliberately on the area's edges rather than something the area provides.
Seminyak is the strip that works on foot
Wonderful Indonesia describes Seminyak as a dining and accommodation precinct with a walkable street-and-beach pattern and lodging from hostels to high-end resorts. That creates evenings where dinner, the beach, and the hotel can sit in one local circuit, depending on the exact block. Compared with Canggu's separated beach ends and narrow connecting lanes, Seminyak is the more coherent walking-led option. Verify the hotel-to-beach route itself before booking.
The trade-offs that actually decide it
Surf: Canggu, clearly — beach breaks and board culture, with the lesson location matched to ability and conditions; Seminyak is also exposed surf coast, so swimming depends on flags and local advice. Food: Seminyak for the destination-restaurant strip; Canggu for volume and variety of casual cafes. Nightlife: a tie at different registers — Canggu's beach clubs and bars versus Seminyak's cocktail-and-dinner circuit. Logistics: Seminyak, with shorter airport transfers and walkable evenings, against Canggu's lane-jams. Cost: broadly similar tier for tier. Is Canggu or Seminyak better for nightlife?
They are different registers of nightlife. Canggu's runs through beach clubs and casual bars with a young crowd; Seminyak's through cocktail bars and long dinners. For dancing until late, Canggu edges it; for a dressed-up evening on foot, Seminyak wins.
How far apart are Canggu and Seminyak?
A few kilometres along the same coast — but south-Bali traffic makes the trip a 20-to-45-minute ride depending on hour. That is exactly why choosing one and staying near your daily anchor beats booking between them.
