This is the real first-trip Bali decision, because it is not two neighbourhoods — it is two different islands wearing one name. An hour or more of traffic apart, Ubud and Canggu share almost nothing: not the landscape, not the crowd, not the daily rhythm. That makes the choice easier than it looks.
Choose Ubud for the interior Bali — rice terraces, river gorges, temple life, yoga, green mornings — and Canggu for the coastal one: surf, beach clubs, cafes, and a young social scene. On a week or more, do both in sequence, Ubud first for calm and Canggu after for the scene (or reverse to end quiet). Under five nights, pick the one that matches the trip's core: culture and calm, or surf and people. Do not attempt to day-trip one from the other daily; the traffic between them consumes the day.

Ubud mornings and Canggu evenings do not mix by commute
The road between the two is traffic-sensitive enough that repeated return trips can consume the useful edges of the day. That kills the tempting plan of basing in one and sampling the other as a daily commute. The workable shapes are one base when the trip matches one mode, or two bases in sequence. The sequence choice is taste: Ubud-then-Canggu ends the trip social; Canggu-then-Ubud ends it rested. Verify the current route time for the exact addresses before fixing a transfer.
What Ubud actually gives you
Ubud's centre is commercial and busy — the monkey forest, the market, the traffic of its own success — but Ubud the base is the ridge and valley country around it: paddy-field walks from your door, waterfalls and water temples within a short drive, ceremony calendars that put processions on ordinary streets, and an evening register of dinners and dance performances rather than clubs. Sleep one ridge outside the centre if calm is the point. Give it three or four nights on a first trip; travellers whose holiday is yoga, craft, or writing often simply live there.
What Canggu actually gives you
Canggu delivers the coastal mode at full volume: surf sessions when conditions and ability suit, a cafe-and-co-working day economy, beach clubs at sunset, and the easiest social circuitry in Bali — it is the base where solo travellers stop being solo. The costs are structural, not fixable by hotel choice: lane traffic, engine noise, and a scene that follows you unless you book its far edges. If those costs read as texture, Canggu will be the best part of the trip; if they read as noise, that answer is Seminyak — or the whole question is really Ubud.

How many days in Ubud versus Canggu?

Can you day-trip Ubud from Canggu?
Once, yes — an early start, the terraces and a temple, back by evening. As a daily pattern, no: the drive runs an hour or more each way in traffic, so commuting between the two consumes the day you were trying to enrich. If Ubud's mode matters to you, sleep there.
